The Huading Awards are a series of Chinese entertainment awards shows, with multiple events hosted throughout the year. The awards honor American and international celebrities in film, TV, and music. Chinese businessman and philanthropist Haige Wang founded the Huading Awards in 2007 while contemplating how to honor celebrities who maintained a positive public image. They are similar to the People’s Choice Awards, in which the people of China vote for the nominees. An estimated 80 million voters in China typically participate in the Huading Awards voting process. The awards typically reach an estimated audience of up to 600 million viewers through broadcasts on more than 60 TV channels in China alone, with an additional 400 million viewers online.
The name “Huading” is a combination of two terms found in monumental Chinese historical texts: The Biography of Book of Documents and Records of the Grand Historian. “Hua,” which comes from The Biography of Books of Documents, means the Chinese nation, while “Ding” from Records of the Grand Historian, means the word carries great weight. The first Huading Awards were held on Dec. 17, 2007 in Beijing. The Huading Awards have been held in California on two occasions, once in 2014 and again in 2016. The next Huading Awards will be held on August 29, 2018 in Los Angeles at The Wiltern Theater.
